You know, there are a lot of things I could bring up when it comes to discussing Korean iterations of Western food (which, much like the Chinese food you get at the mall, is altered to suit local tastes and ingredients at the expense of authenticity). But most of it is, at least understandable. Not worth writing home about, at least. However, lunch today was the second instance of something I just can’t not mention.

Spaghetti.

Korean spaghetti sauce actually tastes delicious. It’s full of vegetables, eaten over wheat flour pasta instead of rice pasta, and overall, I cannot complain. Except that, you know, it’s eaten on rice. Not the spaghetti sauce, but. . .the spaghetti. With the noodles. Is eaten like a side dish that you put on your rice. Because somehow, pasta is not carbs-y enough.

I swear, I’m not making this up. I’d take a photo if it wasn’t really weird to photograph other people eating. And maybe it’s just a thing they do in my area, or a thing the teachers I eat with do that not everyone does. But it’s silly and charming.

Oh, and hey, guess what else happened today? (Well, not today, because it’s Sunday, but recently!) I got my first POSTCARD. (You can send me one, too!) From Jenn, and it’s lovely (because hi, art school) and so I am showing you a photo of it here. I’ve linked off the blog for this one, because the postcard is really pretty, and deserves to be seen full size. So CLICK IT.

Isn’t it pretty? So thank you, Jenny! In return, I give you a link to Robert Munsch reading The Paper Bag Princess, which I did not at all stumble across by accident doing an unrelated task for school. I found it FOR YOU, because of that one time you dressed up as her for Halloween and it was awesome.

Anyway. I’m going to go finish knitting my sweater, because apparently people in Korea don’t close the windows when the temperature dips below 10C, they just put on a coat. My office is a little chilly.

  1. Ah! This could be the end of Propeller Bitter!

Oh, and that’s a very cool postcard.

  2. The only problem is I realized as I was scanning it, that I never got Sam finished. That’s why Dan’s head is pasted onto the one side, to cover up half-Sam. When I drew it in first year I didn’t have a head-on picture of Sam, so I waited and forgot. Sorry, Sam.

  3. Clearly I need to become a farmer to support my love of delicious hoppy beer.

  4. Hey Can you send me your adress? Thanks
